During inclement weather, source power may be compromised and temporary stop control devices may need to be deployed to maintain signal operations. For many signals, this form of temporary stop control devices are stop signs.

Designation by signals can be found under Cabinet Details by signal type, as seen in Figure 1.

MMC managers will notify operators to request stop signs for temporary deployment. Once instructed, staff will click on the Manage Dark Signals button at the top of the MMC homepage, as seen in Figure 2.

Once selected, MMC is able to toggle signals to Dark (and needing some form of temporary stop control device), and also issue work orders to Signs and Markings for temporary stop sign deployment. This SOP will focus specifically on temporary stop sign deployment. MMC will then click ‘Emergency Sign Deployment’. You might be re-prompted to sign in again – sign in normally.

The next step is to identify the signal needing stop signs by Primary and Secondary cross streets. Select the streets, and identify the Area (North, Central, South), and then submit (Figure 3).

Once requested, Signs and Markings supervisors will assign the work order to staff as appropriate. The MMC shall call Signs and Markings supervisors as applicable to alert them work orders are being generated. There is no need to call with every request.

Signs and Markings staff refer to for processes to deploy signage.
