Austin Bicycle Facilities

  • It comes from a dataset that compiles all current infrastructure and the shapefile does not include any future projects.

  • The Bike Level of Comfort field has been determined based on a number of factors, including how comfortable a facility feels to people of all ages and abilities, and public feedback. Our method uses Roger Geller’s Four Types of Cyclists to determine an appropriate level of comfort for people in the Interested but Concerned type, which has also led to an All Ages and Abilities approach to building cycling infrastructure in the city.

  • Streets like Barbara Jordan have not been assigned a level of comfort because the level of comfort designation was created for printed bike maps, and to not clutter the map, only certain routes were chosen to be mapped, with input from the public. With every version of the map, the level of comfort assigned to a route is updated as new infrastructure is installed, or through public feedback, if suggestions are deemed appropriate.

  • The dataset is updated frequently. Please let us know if you would like a more recent export. You can also take a look at our online bike map.
